Свалки это источник ядовитого дыма, выделяющегося при открытом горении мусора, а также эпидемий, так как там развиваются сотни видов болезнетворных микробов. Мэрия Южно-Сахалинска вместо того, чтобы сделать упор на переработку мусора пока ограничивается планами открытия нового полигона, где отходы будут прессовать, упаковывать в целлофан, а затем закапывать под землю.
